The world is a big place, and Itzal feels glad that he won't need to deal with it. He can just get a job as a librarian and leave the Razorgrass Sea to tend to itself... Right? Itzal Dantzari has graduated from the Orphan's Academy as a full-fledged Bone Jack, the order of philosopher knights who are a last vestige of a long-gone world. He wants nothing more from the rest of his life than to lose himself in the oldest library in the land and forget about the dull world outside. But when Lilywhite, an old mentor, comes to town, Itzal can't miss the opportunity to take a detour on his way to his new job and tell Lilywhite that he's finished school.
When pirates interrupt their conversation over tea, Itzal and Lilywhite find themselves overpowered, and wake up later on their way to they know not where into the politically complicated world of the Razorgrass Sea.
Itzal faces a choice: does he wriggle his way out of the clutches of the pirates and return to his dusty books, or does he join the troubles of the world and become a Bone Jack?
