Killigan Ghor, born a blacksmith, finds something in a swamp behind his house, putting him on the road to becoming a Pillar Scieldan to protect his home and his father. He discovers that the pillar training is far more dangerous than what he imagined. He is also taught a harsh truth during the early days of his training: War does not make heroes.
