Book 1 Alaric and Sage's story ends at 192, which then starts a new story about Alexander, their first born, and his mate( I'm guessing. As of this writing, I did not continue on... I actually didnt read the last of Sage and Alaric either. You'll see why below.)
The story starts off at a good pace, luring you in with its intrigue and mystery. Then it starts adding a little politics to set the background for all the failure thats about to happen over the next 190 chapters.
This was a poorly written serial book. It dragged on and on, prolonging the reveal of the true identity and Sage's background. Sage constantly heard a song that she repeatedly ignored. She constantly had hints and recollections of something that she'd decide to dismiss, ALWAYS related to a threat of some sort or her old abusive pack. At one point she said she'd learned something from her mother, then that was forgotten and then said she'd never remembered her past at all as the new background was later written in.
Here is why I rated low, would have rated lower but it won't let me change my stars.
First, Alaric gets her to the castle KNOWING how the politics are, knowing how his ex can be AND knowing what just happened to Sage at the pack she grew up in, with the bullying from the main girl that like the alpha heir. Does he shield her from his ex knowing he is wolfless, send the ex away, put guards on her, you know, since he's the KING and he can do that? Absolutely not. And this commences the bullying of Sage yet again.
Second, his Beta, knowing what happened to Sage, knowing what Sage is to Alaric, sends the ex to retrieve Alaric and Sage for their journey from Sage's pack. He didn't warn Alaric so that they could make an excuse to send her to her own territory (which was weird that she seemed to live there in the castle seeing as how she was his ex and not from his pack, her father, an alpha, having his own pack).
Iris, Alaric's sister and the Beta's mate, although was sweet and kind to Sage, turned out to be useless. She watched Eris constantly bullying Sage, but NEVER ONCE actually saying anything TO Eris to confront her. All her threats about retribution towards Eris were always said AFTER Eris left or when they were alone later and her finding out what Eris did or said. It's like, hello, you're a princess! You outrank Eris, all this righteous indignation in private isn't solving any problems. And it's didnt like she didn't know of or hear the rumors Eris spread, it's not like she didn't know what she was doing, but again, no protection for the wolfless Sage.
Third, Alaric himself. The Impotent Lycan King. He actually had no real power, with the way he was written. He was supposed to be the all powerful Lycan king whose growl would make people come to heel, but NO ONE submitted to him. He seemed powerful when it started at Sage's pack, but as soon as he reached the castle, not a single one of the noble wolves seems to bow to him. He wasn't respected in the least and was easily led by the nose, doing things at their whim under the guise of not letting them see a weakness. Which... actually was the biggest weakness of all because he couldn't even protect his own mate. She was constantly hurt by him and his people. He did nothing. He didn't even tell her they were mates! He always snuck around to see her, giving her comforting words but no real protection. It was heartbreaking to read over 150 chapters of the author trying to spin his whispered sweet words into actual care and protection, then to have his POV and his lame excuses for why he couldn't do more because the nobles were waiting to see a weakness in him. ITS HIS MATE! WTF! If not your mate, who else can you soften towards and show weakness to? The entire "Political Posturing" plot ruined the book. It renders Alaric impotent. He wasn't really ruling anything. The nobles were via threats, complaints, and gossip... spreading lies to influence things in their favor and against the king. The king seemed to have no allies among the nobles in his own court, where normal there are at least a few loyal to the crown. The politics made Alaric unable to defend and protect his mate. I mean, he'd roar out some crap about her being under his protection, but it meant absolutely nothing due to the politics. His own palace guards, who should be loyal to the royal family, would work under the orders of an outsider, no questions asked. He even let his father dictate that he would mate Eris for political gain... announced in front of his mate (who doesn't know she's his mate but thinks they have something) and says not one word. HE IS ALREADY KING! Not the heir! Why is his father arranging his marriage? Dumb book. I read to at least 160, I can't remember exactly, but at this point Alaric still wasn't protecting her, just with empty words still, after having said the came to a revelation that she wasn't a weakness and he would do more to protect her not caring what people said. But I guess the author forgot and went right back into verbal protection and private comfort again.
I can't recommend it.
